The Department of Agriculture gave an incentive of P2,000,000.00 to the Local Government Unit of Iligan City for being able to officially register at least 80% of the total number of fishermen in the city.
The DA is collecting the data of fishermen in the Philippines and provides an incentive to LGUs that can register 80-100% of the total number local fishermen in their respective city. According to Councilor Capitan, the data collected can be used to figure out the financial assistance that the DA can provide to fishermen in times of emergencies.
Councilor Capitan also stated that there were initially some negative reactions by local fishermen as to why they were caught when not registered. However, the initiative brought a positive result, as the P2,000,000.00 incentive will be used for development projects that will benefit the local fishermen of Iligan City. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Technical Institute of DA also provided an additional assistance of P50,000.00 to the LGU for research and development.
Councilor Capitan officially turned over the reward to the LGU through Acting City Mayor Jemar Vera Cruz and Mr. Ocatavio Molo, department head of the City Agriculturist’s Office, yesterday, August 13, during the flag ceremony at the Anahaw Amphitheatre.
